LO Fun

LarsonO'Brien Advertising Quote of the week: “The idea is that everyone is going to have a house, a car and a TV. That’s the American dream.” Pete Campbell to African-American elevator operator. –Mark

Runner-up: “Creatives waste paper because they throw out bad ideas.” Don to Lane –Lauren B

Scene of the week: Lane’s lecture to the staff on the overuse of pencils, paper and expense accounts, followed by Don’s abrupt departure when he realizes what the meeting is about. The look of contempt on Don’s face was priceless. Classic Don Draper. –Lauren B

Runner-up: Don and Sally eating in the middle of the night. A step in the right direction or too good to be true? –Mark

Foreshadowing of the week: The tension between Don and Sally’s teacher was palpable. From their awkward meeting to her borderline inappropriate phone call, it seems as if no good will come of the situation. –Lauren B

Runner-up: Dennis’ new commitment to fatherhood and being a better man and Don’s contemplative reaction. Will it influence Don? Will little Gene serve as a new start for Don and/or Betty? –Mark

Don Draper and Sally DraperHistorical Reference of the week: The entire hospital sequence was unreal. “Your job is done,” the nurse tells Don as she whisks Betty off to an almost catatonic level of sedation, leaving Don to drink and smoke with his new prison guard pal.  It’s  amazing to see how much things have changed since the ’60s. –Lauren B

I loved this sequence as well. The role of the husband during childbirth was essentially to serve as chauffeur, then drink and watch TV in the waiting room. How is that different from any other day? –Mark

Fashion of the week: It was great to finally see what’s become of Duck Phillips, who looked sharp in his turtleneck sweater. –Lauren B

Runner-up: With Joan absent from this episode, I have to give this week’s award to Mrs. Draper in her first dream sequence. Looking good Betts. –Mark

LO let down of the week: A big shout out of embarrassment to the two blurred Madder of Opinion contributors, Nick and Lauren L, who didn’t catch this week’s episode. Don’t worry, Lauren B and I held down the fort while you slacked.

See you next week!

Don Draper misses big meetings, shows up late, takes mental holidays. I’ll just assume this is all in jest, and that behind it all, you appreciate the quiet, distant genius that Lauren and I bring to the blog (almost) every week.

Glad that’s settled.
